and we stood around awkwardly.
The thing was that we’d been walking down this embankment
on the way to Rite Aid to get a few scoops of mint chip each.
Our hearts hadn’t fallen from so high, really
[if I stood on your shoulders, we couldn’t brush the bridge marked 14’]
but they’d rolled when they fell
down
and slowed among a patch of late daffodils.
We stood around in a circle
[even though there was only the two of us]
looking at our hearts
trying to remember whose was whose
and how we’d walk down the rest of the embankment without them.
